1. Your debut solo album (GUITARIST FREDDIE FOX) has been very well-received, and is an exceptionally impressive step for you as an artist. After years of work primarily as a sideman, what propelled you into making this album?
FF: I've been working on this CD for a while now and the time seemed to be right, along with technology helping to cut down the cost. The studios were much too expensive, so I did most of the work at home, and network the format to do all the live stufflike, drums, percussion, bass, etc.
2.What changes and opportunities have you seen come your way as a result of your new album?
FF: A few Independent record companies have come my way, but not the right contract yet. I've also met some people who can maybe help out in the future with my career. Radio stations are now playing my CD all over the world and know that I can deliver the right songs, if the opportunity permits. The reason I say this is because it is very hard today to get your material out to the world, without a lot of money and support. I've studied for four years at Berklee College of Music, worked as a sideman for many major artists, and played onrecords that becamebig hits...so I know what to do and I'm prepared to deliver when giventhe chance.
3. Congratulations on your role onthe new Marion Meadows project, PLAYER’S CLUB.How did that all come about?
FF: I met the producer of Marion's CD, Michael Broening on a gig with Ce Ce Peniston. He was the M.D. on the gig and we just clicked and had a great time playing together. It is true that some people do remember good things and come back to them, and he did just that. We networked all the songs through the mail and I did it at home on my computer and sent it back. He knew that I was a producer as well as a player, so I sent him some guitar tracks that were just right and in the groove. :)
4. You’re married to Evelyn “Champagne” King, and collaborate on music projects.Who tends to take the lead in these collaborative efforts, or do you share the creativity and drive equally?
FF: We basically work together. However, Evelyn is a strong melody writer and plays a little bit of keyboard too. When it comes to my projects, though, I pretty much take the lead...and sometimes ask her opinion.
5. At what point in your life do you recall really feeling like you, without a doubt, had the potential to be a major success as a musician?
FF: When I listened to the radio, I knew I could do the same thing or maybe even better. But I feel that there is always something more to learn. This way I can keep moving forward and learn from others who have set the path before me.
6. What have you found to be the driving force behind your accomplishments in music…something deep inside that’s kept you going even during times of challenge and setbacks?
FF: God, family, my wife, and a lady, Ms. Ann Hickerson-Jennings, (from Tullahoma Tenn.) who has helped me from the beginning. Thank you soooo much!
7. Your credentials are quite impressive.Of all the work you've done with well-known headliners over the years, is there one experience that stands out as especially meaningful?
FF: "Atlantic Starr", because I was able to travel overseas to places I'd never been before and may never ever get tovisit again because of wars going on now.
8. Which guitarist would you credit as being the most influential to you in how you play and craft your music?
FF: George Benson, my idol, who has the ability to play R&B, as well as jazz. I love all music as long as it 's creative and positive. There's too much negativity already in this world now.
9. All of the songs on your debut album are Freddie Fox originals, and are exceptionally good. What or who has been your biggest inspiration for your songwriting?
FF: Definitely my wife, Evelyn. She's my inspiration and my song. When you have that, you have so much to say and so many ways to say it. Love Ya Babe!
10. If you were to project your career out ten years from now, what would you like to be able to look back on as a “greatest achievement” to that point?
FF: Recorded great music, and have something to show for it, physically and spiritually.
