Everybody involved in putting this CD out, from the musicians to the production folks must’ve had an amazingly positive vibe goin’ on, because jazz trombonist Steve Baxter’s SUGAR ON THE BONE is an outrageously awesome collection of music! Steve’s roster of players is a Who’s Who of contemporary jazz, including names like Randy Crawford, Wilton Felder, Michael Lington, and Everette Harp… and that’s just scratching the surface. I was trying to pick favorites off this album, and basically I love everything on it. There’s just not a track here that wouldn’t enhance a Smooth Jazz station’s playlist or get a positive reaction from listeners. Everyone who considers him/herself to be a discerning jazz aficionado will enjoy having this one in their library, with its tasty variety of textures and rhythms. Steve Baxter’s SUGAR ON THE BONE is sweet, sweet music to my ears. It will be to yours, too!

In the tradition of vocalists such as Basia and Astrud Gilberto, a fresh new voice on the scene debuts with a truly delightful collection of original songs ranging from jazz to pop to Brazilian to gentle retro funk. Chicago-based Polish American songstress Agnieszka Iwanska’s debut release, ALL THAT I AM, is a brilliant collaboration between Ms. Iwanska and well-known composer/producer/keyboardist Paul Scherer, and just gets better and better with each listen. There are nine different songs on the CD, plus Polish language versions of three of them. Highlights to my ear include the title track, plus “Thinking About You,” featuring some stunning flute work from Shawn Maxwell, and the jazzy “Love Around,” featuring the talented Scott Angst on sax. Overall, Agnieszka Iwanska’s ALL THAT I AM is an impressive musical journey filled with meaningful lyrics, captivating melodies, and an over-riding element of charm that you’ll find impossible to resist!

It only took 35 years for guitarist Frank Jones to pool his musical knowledge and experience to record his own music, but if you look at those years as practice for IT'S ALL ABOUT ME, then his patience has paid off. Self taught to the music of artists such as the Ventures and Duane Eddy, instrumental music remains his passion and every note on the EP exudes that passion and hard-earned talent. “K.B.” is light-hearted and mellifluous, while “Strat-o-sphere” takes a more upbeat path and showcases Jones' technical prowess on his instrument. Hot on the heels of his critically acclaimed TRAVELER album, Lie has definitely cranked it up a whole lotta notches for this killer collection of ten amazing tunes, all but one of which were written by Terje, Jimmy, and/or Jeff. Look out, Brian Culbertson and Gregg Karukas! There’s a new player on the field. His name is Michael Scherer, he lives in Decatur, IL, and he’s very, very good! Michael’s debut release, EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS, is unquestionably world-class stuff! Just check out his first radio single, “Change for the Better,” and you’ll hear exactly what I mean. Here’s a guy who started his musical training at the age of five, and by the time he reached adolescence had advanced firstly as a classical pianist; then as a mature jazz performer on both piano and trombone. SHIKANDAZA Crossroads iVision Music
Far East musicianship meets the smooth grooves of the West on Shikandaza’s CROSSROADS to create a cool sound they call Japanese Jazz. This outstanding recording of Asian fusion is a fantastic follow up to the 2003 debut ON THE BRIDGE. In Japanese the word “shikandaza” translates to orchestra… it breaks down like this: Shi means strings, kan means flute, da means percussion and za means group. The Shikandaza shikandaza includes the ancient instruments of Japan, such as the shakuhachi, koto and shamisen… all played with a Smooth Jazz feel and vibe and at the helm of this innovative ensemble is Canadian producer, musician and educator Ian Smith. Some local bands stay local. Others move beyond the city and county limits and become superstars. Zoe’ (pronounced “dzo-ay’) most definitely falls into the latter category. They’ve developed a well-earned reputation as being one of the hottest Smooth Jazz groups in Philadelphia/South Jersey and LET’S FLY, their third release, should easily put them into the World spotlight. Created in 2001, Zoe’ consists of sax man and leader Reggie Harris, guitarist Ron Segers, Cleveland Belin on keys, drummer David Ferebee, bassist H. Maurice Fonville and percussionist/trumpeter Bolivar “Chico” Guadalupe. LET’S FLY is just an excellent collection of mostly original tunes… tasty, compelling Smooth Jazz, with a variety of enticing textures supported by an unmistakable groove. The interplay between Reggie’s sax work and Ron Segers’ guitar is definitely a highlight of this outstanding CD. Mark my words, Zoe’ is poised to stand head to head with the best of the best!
