Saxophonist Mekiel Reuben has enjoyed a decades long, multi-faceted career that includes stints with reggae bands, touring with Ike Turner and the Kings of Rhythm and bringing joy for 20 years to disabled students at a special education center in Los Angeles. Celebrating 30 years since his debut album, the multi-talented artist drops a sly, seductive and energizing light-funk track whose smile-inducing title gives away the Smooth Jazz influences he’s paying homage to, “Boney Kirk.” Lively and engaging from start to finish, its rousing chorus has a Boney James vibe while the easygoing silk of the verses is reminiscent of Kirk Whalum’s cool style.
