Just over three decades since his fusion band Under the Lake first captivated contemporary jazz audiences, Jayson Tipp’s solo career is in full swing. Breaking through with “Time to Roll,” which stayed in the Top 20 on Billboard’s airplay chart for nine weeks, the multi-faceted keyboardist/composer is off to a prolific start in ’25, dropping “People Together” (a re-imagined UTL track) and now “Memory Lane,” a hip, uber-melodic, funky gem produced by Darren Rahn. If the track’s restless vibe reminds you of classics by Bob James, The Crusaders and Joe Sample, there’s a good reason. Tipp came up influenced by those artists along with Jeff Lorber, Chick Corea and Pat Metheny, resulting in a style Tipp affectionately calls “rough jazz.”
