Keith Wesby

Keith Wesby

Keith Wesby

You play bass and keys on your great new release, "Before Dawn."
Your prime instrument for your career has been the bass guitar,
though. How did you make the decision to concentrate on bass?

Unless you’re an artist, athlete, or someone who’s been touched by passion, it may be difficult to understand. But to me, the Bass is the instrument that stands out in any musical piece. Actually, the Clarinet was my first instrument. And I really enjoyed the beautiful tones it produced. But whenever I’d listen to music, it wasn’t the Clarinet pulling on my heart strings, it was the Bass guitar. So I like to think the Bass chose me, not the other way around.

Which style or styles of jazz do you feel you are the most connected
with?

As an artist, I try to stay in touch with all styles of music. I’m most connected to jazz and any other style of music that explores the complex art of “improvisation”.

So far in your career, what would you say is the most significant
thing you've achieved?

That’s hard to categorize. Music is a journey. Each milestone in the journey brings about a significant sense of achievement. So if we look at the journey as a whole, I’d say things like working professionally, entertaining the audience, shedding on my ax, completing a composition, and recording a CD are all significant achievements.

What's new and exciting in your musical career right now?

I’m currently writing music for my next CD. Some new musicians will be working on the project to give it a slightly new flavor.

Beyond your music experiences, what is the most challenging thing you
have ever undertaken?

Parenthood.

If you were actually listed in the dictionary, what would you like it
to say under "Keith Wesby"?

Keith Wesby would be defined as an honest person, a decent golfer, and oh yeah…a fantastic musician.
