What elements do you look for in a song that makes it especially satisfying for you to perform?
I look for passionate performances, the power of love, and messages of healing and overcoming obstacles.
Who are some of your current favorite artists, Smooth Jazz or otherwise?
I love all kinds of singers and musicians, including Julio Iglesias, The Bee Gees, Olivia Newton John & Chris Botti. So much so that I asked if Chris would join me on a few of my songs, including my single 'Hello', which he agreed to do, and I was so honored that he would play his amazing trumpet with me!
What would you define as the most life-changing event so far in your musical career?
I was a practicing nurse in Toronto before I became a singer. I used to sing to my patients, and they responded to my voice, which helped in their healing and comfort. I received a wonderful gift from the father of one of my patients who said you have helped heal my son, and I would like to help you by sponsoring your musical career. I am so incredibly grateful, and it is a dream come true!
At what point in your life did you make the decision to become a professional musician and actually record your own albums?
This moment above, when I was given the chance to pursue a musical path, is the how and when the decision was made to become a full time singer and devote my life to singing, and to healing with my music. And the result is a very special album to me, 'Exotica'
Going back in your life as far as you can remember, what song or performance is the first you recall hearing and being affected by?
I remember listening to 'I Honestly Love You' by Olivia Newton John when I was very young. Hearing that beautiful voice and those passionate words while I was hiding away in my room during wartime in Iran was an escape, and it helped teach me English, as well as instilling a belief that overcoming odds is possible.
What’s your absolute favorite part of the World, and why?
Although I love Canada and my home town of Toronto, my heart belongs to Spain. I am in love with the culture and the language. It's one of the main reasons why I chose Flamenco as the musical basis of a number of my songs, and have performed some songs from my album in Spanish.
